The formula

cost = distance (km) × L/100 km ÷ 100 × price per litre. A 450 km trip in a car using 8.5 L/100 km at $1.55/L uses 38.3 L and costs about $59.

Getting realistic numbers

  • Official ratings are measured under ideal conditions. Add 10–20% for highway speeds above 110 km/h, roof boxes or a full load.
  • Canadian winters can raise consumption by 15–25% (cold engines, winter tires, heaters).
  • Your car’s trip computer or a fill-to-fill calculation gives the most accurate economy figure.
